Dr Katie Sutton
As a senior lecturer in German and Gender Studies in CASS, I would like to nominate as a member of Academic Board. I bring an interdisciplinary research and teaching profile as a cultural historian of gender and sexuality teaching modern languages, gender and cultural studies. I also bring leadership experience as Deputy Head of School and a founding convenor of the Education Reference Group in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, working with colleagues from multiple disciplines to create School-wide consultation frameworks around curriculum sustainability, teaching and assessment. This interdisciplinary and leadership experience will serve me in good stead as a CASS representative in Academic Board.
I consider it the Board's responsibility to ensure commitment to the highest academic standards, fostering in students the core skills, knowledge, and time-honoured forms of learning specific to our disciplines, while adapting these to a rapidly changing tertiary education landscape. I am committed to student equity and support, including for international, Indigenous, first-in-family, regional, and LGBTIQ+ students, and see the integration of decolonizing strategies into our teaching as a significant, immediate goal. I believe in quality teaching that is at the cutting edge of our disciplines and aimed at producing critical, well-rounded citizens.
