It has been a privilege to represent ANU Professional Staff on the Academic Board since September 2020, and particularly to participate over the past two years of COVID challenge and disruption. The work of the Board spans an array of significant matters that recently has included discussion of the process of undergraduate curriculum reform, and approval of a statement of graduate attributes.

I have become more acutely aware of the part that professional staff can and do play in the development of graduate attributes, as well as in the provision of services and support that are crucial for both academic and personal enrichment and success. It was a privilege to take part in a workshop on academic freedom/freedom of speech, as well as more recently on the University's position concerning Russia and the invasion of Ukraine. I noted and affirmed the need, expressed in a report from the Diversity Committee, of more representation of professional/technical staff on the Academic Board.

My own particular area of work at the ANU in student residences so much depends on the work and support of professional staff in administrative, operational/technical and facilities roles who directly contribute to the safety and wellbeing of some five to six thousand students living and learning on campus - the largest resident population per head of any campus in Australia. This has been highlighted by the demands of coping with COVID as we supported students remaining on campus over the pandemic period or maintaining connection from home; and by the very recent release of the National Survey on Student Safety, with the challenges of being on the 'front-line' of continuing development of appropriate care, training, prevention and response concerning sexual harassment and sexual assault.  My work particularly with postgraduate and international students affirms the continuing need for greater focus on best practice in orientation, transition and support.

I am committed and keen to build on my Board experience so far and to represent the Professional Staff of the University to the best of my ability.
