ANU Orchestra Auditions & Concerto Competition

Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

ANU School of Music students are invited to audition to perform a short concerto or concertante work, or concerto movement, at the ANU Orchestra concert in Week 12 of Semester 2. Preference will be given to students who choose repertoire that aligns with the capacity and instrumental forces of the orchestra, and for which there are either parts in the library or available on IMSLP. Pianists and vocalists are welcome to apply.

At the audition on Wednesday 19 July, applicants are invited to perform a movement or excerpt of their chosen concerto not exceeding 10 minutes. Students may audition with an associate pianist playing the orchestral reduction at their own expense. Choosing to audition with or without a pianist will have no bearing on the panel's deliberations.

Are you an orchestral musician looking to play in the ANU Orchestra in 2023?

Housed at the ANU School of Music and conducted by Canberra's Max McBride, the Orchestra is a chance to play with the best music students at ANU, as well as professionals from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra.

Orchestra members rehearse Wednesday evenings from 7.00 - 9.30PM in Llewellyn Hall.

Audition dates

Applications for Semester 2 auditions are now open. Auditions from all instrumentalists are welcome, but violin, viola, double bass, bassoon, trombone and French horn players are particularly encouraged to apply.

Semester 2 auditions will take place during O-Week, on Wednesday 19 July in the Foster Room, Peter Karmel Building 121. Applicants are expected to be available for all times and will not receive an audition time until one week in advance. Make up times for missed auditions will not be offered.

Current ANU Orchestra members (except flautists) do not need to reaudition, and automatically have a place in the orchestra in Semester 2.

If you have any queries, please email School of Music Administration.
