Design for impact: Kambri Scholarships program

Join us during National Reconciliation Week 2021 for an informative and insightful conversation about how we can design Indigenous programs with real impact in higher education. 

The Australian National University (ANU) Kambri Scholarships program offers a radical approach to supporting First Nations peoples to study at ANU. It features flexible payment structures tailored to each recipient, combined with pastoral care and culturally aware support.  The program also aims to create a cohort of Kambri Scholars that supports the entire learning lifecycle; fostering an environment for long-term mentorship, influence, and paying it forward to the community and Country. 

Hear how these awards were developed and implemented, and their positive impact within the College and University communities. Featuring ANU Tjabal Indigenous Higher Education Centre Scholarships Program Manager - Andrew Coulter, Tjabal Student Recruitment Officer - Peter Swanston, and Head of Advancement at the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) - Eric Billman. 

This seminar is a key opportunity for our community to listen, learn, and engage with innovative Indigenous program design and to reflect on the role of reconciliation in our University.

Biography

Andrew Coulter 
Scholarship Program Manager 

As the Scholarship Program Manager, Andrew oversees the suite of Indigenous scholarships offered by the University, including the Kambri Indigenous Undergraduate Scholarship.   

Andrew has worked at ANU since 2005, focusing on administering coursework scholarships, with experience in student fees, and higher degree research (HDR) scholarships and enrolments. 

Peter Swanton  

Student Recruitment Officer  

Peter is an ANU alumnus, having graduated in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics. Since graduating, Peter has taken the position of Student Recruitment Officer at the Tjabal Centre, where he develops programs and strategies to engage young Indigenous students in pursuing higher education. Peter also assists prospective students with their applications, and provides information to students on alternative pathways to university. 

Eric Billman 
Head of Advancement - CECS  

Eric has been with the ANU College of Engineering and Computing since September 2019. During this time, he has worked on setting up the new College Advancement team and has overseen the first year that the College has raised over $1 million in philanthropic funding. 

Over the course of his thirty-year career in relationship management, Eric has worked in the non-profit world as a consultant and fundraiser in Higher Education, healthcare, community organisations, and churches. He has recently published a book with his wife on the Art and Science of Donor Bliss.
