Governing through harm reduction: human infrastructure as a governmental resource

This presentation focuses on the learnings of harm reduction as a form of governing drug use disorders. The presentation provokes seminar participants to extend this approach to other areas of governance, particularly at the level of local government.

About the Speaker

Monique Marks is a Research Professor at the Durban University of Technology where she heads up the Urban Futures Centre (UFC@DUT). The UFC@DUT is a transdisciplinary hub for imagining new normative urban futures that prioritises triple helix arrangements and improvement of quality of life of the most marginal of urban dwellers. Monique also co-directs the Bellhaven Harm Reduction Centre, South Africa's first low-threshold comprehensive harm reduction centre for people who use drugs. She is the author of 7 books and over 60 peer reviewed articles. Her research focus areas are security governance, harm reduction, and inclusive cities.
