In Conversation: Jessica Loughlin and Dr Jeffrey Sarmiento

A studio glass artist for over twenty-five years, Jessica Loughlin has dedicated her practice to the pursuit of capturing the transient qualities of light and the quiet sense of contemplation it provokes in the viewer. Known for her understated aesthetic, Loughlin takes her artistic cues from the vast, flat landscapes and salt lakes of South Australia. Loughlin is one of Australia's most internationally acclaimed glass artists and is renowned for her highly innovative technical approach to kilnformed glass. Read more.

Dr Jeffrey Sarmiento is a Senior Lecturer at the ANU School of Art & Design. Known for his creative practice exploring cultural identity and the graphic image in glass, Sarmiento embeds layers of information in his intricately constructed objects, sculptures and public commissions. Sarmiento served as Associate Professor in Glass at the University of Sunderland, where he completed a PhD in 2011. Educated at Rhode Island School of Design, he has been a Fulbright Fellow in Denmark and artist in residence at UrbanGlass in New York, S12 in Bergen, Norway, and Pilchuck Glass School. A pioneer of print techniques for kiln glass, he has taught workshops in China, Australia, New Zealand, Estonia, Latvia, Switzerland, Ireland, the UK and the USA. Read more.

JamFactory ICON Jessica Loughlin: of light will tour 13 venues nationally with support from the Australia Council's Contemporary Touring Initiative. The exhibition is accompanied by Jessica Loughlin: from here, a 183-page hard-cover monograph copublished by JamFactory and Wakefield Press, featuring essays by Julie Ewington and Tina Oldknow.
