Iraq at the crossroads: Reflections and prospects

Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

A massive anti-government protest movement started in October 2019 condemning rampant corruption, sectarian policies, an authoritarian government and dismal public services in Iraq. Mustafa al-Kadhimi was appointed as the new prime minister in May 2020 and his new coalition government, which includes groups from across the political spectrum, has yet to deliver on any of the major challenges facing Iraq. In this lecture, Hafsa Halawa will shed light on multiple and complex issues facing Iraq nationally and regionally and offer insights on possible future scenarios.
