Mycelium and Microscopes Workshop

Presented by ANU College of Arts & Social Sciences

The seriousness of topsoil-loss humanity is facing, is both terrifying and heartbreaking. Creative techniques of ecological intimacy help us to weather this terror. Who might we be if we began to come home to soil? To treat soil as a loved one?

Mycelium and Microscopes is a creative soil microscopy workshop led by Sophia "Flo" Dacy-Cole, Higher Degree by Research Candidate at the ANU School of Art & Design. This interdisciplinary research investigates the somatic side of scientific methodologies for meeting soil personhoods, specifically microscopy and bioacoustics. For this workshop, Sophia is collaborating with Dr Erica Seccombe, Senior Lecturer at the School, who will lead the drawing component. Participants will have the opportunity to have their creative contributions and observations included in Sophia’s final thesis.

The workshop will take place 1-5pm, Friday 8 March
Foundation Room 1 (G.52)
ANU School of Art & Design
Building 105, Childers Street, Acton.

The workshop will include:
- A (very) brief history of soil and microscopy in art, including a presentation of Sophia's own research on the topic
- A meditation on soil sounds
- Dr. Erica Seccombe's tried and tested microscopy drawing techniques
- A reflective and embodied discussion

Materials supplied, but attendees are asked to bring:
- some fresh soil that is meaningful to them
- a smartphone or iPad

The workshop employs drawing and embodiment techniques, facilitating an intimate encounter with soil. It offers participants a chance to deepen and widen their relationship with this overlooked resource. All levels and experience in either art or soil are welcome! This workshop is open to the public.

All attempts will be made to make the workshop accessible on the day, for further information please email Sophia.Cole@anu.edu.au
