Risk, reward, and resilience – applying AI and LLMs

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

Striking a balance between risk, reward, and resilience is now the centre of many public discussions and policy-making around the world. Addressing complex policy challenges is difficult as they are inherently complex, crossing disciplinary silos and departmental divides.

This presentation explores an integrative framework, called the RRR framework, which synthesizes insights from diverse disciplines and domains. It provides a new mental model for thinking about and working through cross-cutting issues across a variety of topics. But what happens when we leverage AI to apply this heuristic framework to a variety of diverse fields?

Large language models (LLMs), such as the one used by ChatGPT, are breaking new ground with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology and capabilities. It is also possible to create computer codes to leverage LLMs for specific purposes. Harnessing the game-changing nature of this AI, Anthea Roberts and Sam Bide are collaborating to code and build out an interactive tool for structured multi-step analysis using generative AI.

Coupling the framework with AI essentially promotes the ease of application to a variety of situations while structuring a foundation for critical conversations. The tool will allow users to create their own practical applications of the RRR framework and support them in making informed choices.

About the speakers

Anthea Roberts, a Professor at RegNet, is an interdisciplinary researcher and legal scholar who focuses on new ways of thinking about complex and evolving global fields. Her research areas include international law, trade and investment, the effect of geopolitical change on global governance, and understanding and navigating complex systems. She is the creator of the Risk, Reward and Resilience Framework for dealing with complex policy issues that require integrative approaches.

Sam Bide has spent nearly a decade working at the intersection of Australia's economic, social, and security priorities. As the director of digital regulation in Australia's Department of Finance, his current focus is promoting holistic solutions to complex issues such as AI, and the incentives, capabilities and processes needed to drive necessary institutional change. He took the lead in creating the initial tool applying the Risk, Reward and Reward framework using AI which he and Anthea are now jointly developing.
