Symposium: Art, Design and Future Environments

Art, Design and Future Environments is a one-day program focusing on the role of creative practice and interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping, and responding to, our environmental futures. It's presented by the Drill Hall Gallery and the School of Art & Design, and is part of Aquifer: Art + Climate + Water, a Territory-wide program of dialogue, events and exhibitions responding to the current climate crisis.

Session One: Future Environments

9 - 10am Drill Hall Gallery

Symposium introduction: Mitchell Whitelaw, Associate Professor, Design, SOA&D and Anne-Marie Jean, Communications and Outreach Coordinator, ANU Drill Hall Gallery.

Jeremy (Jez) Lepisto is a practicing artist and the Technical Services Team Coordinator at the SOA&D. With his experience in the operation and development of personal, public, and educational art studios and industrial manufacturing facilities, Jeremy is helping to identify the projects and the pathway that the SOA&D can take to meet the 2030 Below Zero target.

Roderick (Rod) Bamford is a practitioner and researcher working at the intersections of art and design. He is Senior Lecturer of Ceramics at SOA&D. His work draws on specialist experience in ceramics, digital media and fabrication to explore the ways emerging technologies, digital aesthetics, and ecologies of production impact producers and consumers.

Anne-Marie Jean will introduce Sonia Leber and David Chesworth's Where Lakes Once Had Water, exhibiting at The Drill Hall Gallery until 10 April.

Session Two: Water Futures Cards Workshop

10.30 - 12.30pm, G.04/05, School of Art and Design

We invite interested ANU students to join us for a collaborative workshop exploring the topic of water futures through playing and designing card games. Participants will engage in a series of card-play activities to create alternative futures and possible worlds.

This workshop is a collaboration between the ANU School of Art & Design and the Institute for Water Futures.

Session Three: {ar}boresecence walk and demonstration

1.30 - 2.30pm, meet at SOAD Gallery

{ar}boresecence is an experiment that uses augmented reality to annotate trees with animated environmental data. Join us for a walk to Kambri to see the app in action, and hear about the project from School of Art and Design researchers Anna Madeleine Raupach and Geoff Hinchcliffe.

This project was supported by a MegaGrant from Epic Games and led by Baden Pailthorpe from the School of Art and Design.

Session Four: Degrees of Concern: artist & research project talks

3.00 - 4.00pm, School of Art & Design Gallery 

Degrees of Concern is an exhibition of conceptual and material responses to climate change at the School of Art & Design Gallery.

Join exhibiting artist and PhD candidate Thomas O'Hara as he talks about his practice.

Professor Mitchell Whitelaw will present and discuss the Water Futures Cards, a collaboration with the ANU Institute for Water Futures. This speculative design project aims to support richer imaginings and inclusive conversations about our water system.
