Waiting out the coup: unpacking youth struggles and resistance in Myanmar

Presented by ANU College of Asia & the Pacific

This event is part of the 2022 MYANMAR RESEARCH CENTRE (MRC) DIALOGUE SERIES.

In this seminar, Francesca will present some preliminary findings on how young people have readjusted to their lives in post-coup Myanmar. With the intensified state violence against protestors and dissents, many have had to shift from more outright resistance to more subtle forms. Drawing on existing literature on the politics of waiting, I seek to examine how the coup and its subsequent political chaos have made young people adopt waiting as a survival strategy. I argue that as the revolution against the SAC stretches on, young people are redefining their acts of resistance and refusal in ways that do not fit into the strict binary of pro-democracy or anti-military.
