- The 2023 ANU Socially Responsible Investment report has been published. ANU Council met on 14 June and endorsed a review of the existing SRI policy. We will provide updates in the coming weeks, including how you can be involved in the consultation process of the review.

Changes to the ANU Council: New and departing members
|
As ANU Council transitions into a new chapter, it extends thanks to Pro-Chancellor Naomi Flutter for her dedicated service and welcomes new appointments to the team.
After a decade of service, Naomi Flutter steps down from her role, paving the way for current external council member Alison Kitchen to take on the Pro-Chancellor responsibility.
Rob Whitfield joins as an external Council member, while Tanya Hosch has been re-appointed to continue her impactful contributions.

Travel is part of how we work and study; the activities we do when we travel can have positive career impacts. However, it’s also one of the largest sources of emissions mapped by ANU, with 40 per cent of our reported carbon footprint in 2023.
In a recent staff survey, 97 per cent of respondents had taken at least one action in the last year that reduced their travel emissions. With new ways of working that remain post-pandemic, our emissions have already reduced from 2019 levels by 33 per cent. Imagine incorporating one more simple action into your travel planning. ANU Below Zero has developed tools to help.

Will left a significant legacy at The Australian National University (ANU)ANU, as the former Director of ANU Fenner School of Environment and Society, and the Inaugural Director of ANU Climate Institute. The inaugural lecture will be delivered by Professor Dr Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor in Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam.

Meet the author – Michael Brissenden

Michael Brissenden will be in conversation with Mike Bowers on his new novel, Smoke. After a brutal wildfire tears through the town of Jasper in the Californian sierras, a body is discovered in a shed. It looks like an open-and-shut case of accidental death – until further investigation reveals that the victim was locked in from the outside.

Observed in June, Pride month celebrates the diversity and progression of the LGBTIQA+ community and allows us to reflect on the path forward to equality. Get involved or seek support this Pride month:
- Join the ANU Ally network, a community of staff and students who are committed to providing an inclusive and respectful environment for people who identify as LGBTIQA+.
- If you are seeking further training and support, the Respectful Relationships Unit provides a range of education, training and events such as the University’s free LGBTIQA+ Ally training.
- If you or someone you know is experiencing discrimination or mental health concerns, you can speak with the Employee Assistance Program who have trained counsellors available for free and confidential support services.
- If you would like to disclose any harmful behaviours at ANU – staff and students can complete a confidential Harmful Behaviours Disclosure, or you can reach out to the Staff Respect Consultant for free and confidential support and connection to a range of services at the university.
- For further external support and services, please visit the LGBTQ+ Health Australia page, which has a range of available services across Australia.
- For local support contact Meridian ACT, a community-based support service in Canberra who deliver programs and services to educate and empower the LGBTIQA+ community, or A Gender Agenda a key support service for Intersex, trans and Gender Diverse people in the Canberra community.

2024 tax changes
The Australian Government has announced changes to withholding tax rates effective 1 July 2024. The changes vary depending on individual earnings and will have an impact on your take-home pay. These changes will be reflected from pay day 4 July 2024. Beware of scams this EOFY
As the EOFY approaches, it’s important to watch out for payroll and tax scams. Scammers may send emails or SMS messages pretending to be from the ANU Remuneration and Conditions Teams or government departments like the Australian Taxation Office and MyGov. These messages often contain links asking for financial and personal information to issue fake refunds. Learn how to recognise and report scams, as well as actions to take if you have been scammed.

Executive Recruitment Update

Provost commences
The University is pleased to announce Professor Rebekah Brown FASSA has commenced her role as Provost and Senior Vice-President as of Monday 17 June. Professor Brown joins ANU after more than a decade in senior academic leadership at Monash University, where she championed equity and inclusion, drove significant increases in research revenue and performance, and founded innovative initiatives to support staff and students to ensure capability development and excellence.

Investing in and enhancing childcare on campus
|
ANU is committed to the ongoing provision of high-quality childcare for our community and will do this through two new purpose-built facilities on campus, which will be open from early 2025. The new facilities will have capacity to meet current demand from families on the campus.
We will commence a procurement process next month to manage those centres from January 2025. Rest assured, the current centres will operate as usual during this process, with on campus childcare services still available for our community.
Our four community providers have offered excellent care over many years. It is the heritage-listed buildings in which they are based that have caused disruption due to the maintenance required to keep them operational. They need ongoing remedial work due to their age, internal water damage, historic traces of lead-based paint, and damage from the 2020 hailstorm.

AuSI International Fellowship program
|
Applications for the 20024-25 International Fellowships program run by the ANU Australian Studies Institute (AuSI) are now open. Academic staff at Levels B – D working on an Australian, transnational, or international project involving Australia could be awarded one of six International Fellowships in collaboration with four of the world’s foremost Australian Studies Centers.
This round, AuSI is offering a new Fellowship location in the Centre for Australian, New Zealand and Pacific studies at Georgetown University.
Applications close at midnight, 24 June 2024.

Indigenous Professional Staff Grants
|
Round two of the Indigenous Professional Staff Grants program for 2024 is now open. This grant program supports the University to recruit and retain Indigenous staff. There have been major recent updates to the program’s guidelines and application form including:

- Addition of cadetships
- Applicant completion of cultural awareness training
- Enterprise agreement 2023-2026 funding increase
- Reporting and consultation requirements

AI adoption survey – deadline extended
|
ANU staff are invited to participate in a survey examining how AI tools are being used by staff in Australian universities for teaching, research and professional work. The findings of this survey will inform higher education policy and practice and assist universities in navigating the AI revolution. Even if you do not use AI tools, your views on AI are valuable to this survey.
The survey deadline has been extended to Sunday 30 June.

Mapping relationships with arts and heritage organisations
|
Do you hold relationships with arts and heritage organisations? Would you like to know of similar connections held across the University that could support your relationship building within this sector? The ANU Arts and Heritage Relationship Mapping project seeks to map relationships held by any ANU researchers with arts and heritage organisations. Take part in a 15-20 minute survey to support future strategic partnership development opportunities in the sector.
