The Jawun Secondment Program offers high-performing academic and professional staff at ANU a unique opportunity to expand their skills and understanding while contributing to the development of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The ANU partnership with Jawun supports Indigenous-led initiatives, providing secondees with valuable experiences and insights.  

This challenging yet rewarding six-week secondment program aims to enhance cultural awareness, leadership capabilities, and professional skills while fostering collaboration with Indigenous organizations. Four placements are available in 2024 (one per quarter), offering participants the chance to work in regions like the Lower River Murray, Far West Coast, or East Kimberly, provided they have the support of their management and commit to representing ANU professionally throughout the program.  

We interviewed a recent secondee, Dr Brett Scholz, a Senior Research Fellow in the School of Medicine and Psychology, ANU College of Health and Medicine, to hear about his experience in the program.

In this lecture, Dr Leviston will reflect on how participating in collective efforts to address environmental decline can change not just the physical environment, but our own emotional responses and wellbeing. In particular, she will discuss the role of how humans perceive each other as an important driver of this change. Following the lecture, the 2023 McMichael Award recipient will be officially announced by Associate Professor Aparna Lal, Director of the McMichael Award Program.

The 18th Latin American Film Festival concludes its second uninterrupted week at the ANU Film Group with these seven final films, from countries such as Uruguay, Cuba and Brazil. 

All screenings are FREE to attend and open to the public – no membership or registration is required. Sessions will commence at 7:30 pm, with the exception of Sunday screenings which start at 6pm. All films will be screened in their original language with English subtitles.

On Friday 1 September the staff at Hancock Library were excited to welcome the Library’s millionth in-person visitor since opening 24/7 in 2019. The visitor, Rory Olsson, who is studying Engineering, entered Hancock mid-morning last Friday and was delighted to receive some ANU merchandise and a gift voucher for Harry Hartog Bookshop.

Following a few years of disruptions to regular on-campus learning and teaching activities, it is a joy to see high numbers of students and other Library users coming through the doors again.

Listening to carers and parents – Survey now open | People and Culture 

All staff can now access the Carers Survey to have a say on the factors that support, or limit, their ability to progress work goals while balancing caring needs.  

This link will take you to the Families and Carers webpage where there are instructions on how to complete the survey. The survey is optional and confidential. It closes on 22 September and will take 5 minutes to complete.   

ANU has made significant improvements for carers through access to flexible work arrangements, creating an electronic change of hours form, paid parental leave of 26 weeks for primary carers (regardless of gender), provisions for career re-entry following parental leave, maintaining superannuation contributions during parental leave and improving the availability of childcare centres on campus. 

While we have made good progress, there are further improvements that can be made to create an environment where everyone can be themselves and achieve their aspirations, regardless of their gender, background or caring responsibilities. People and Culture is focused on listening to staff to understand the conditions, systems and culture that will enable everyone to thrive equally in their careers. We will collate responses to develop a set of practical, innovative actions.
