20 years since Canberra’s bushfire disaster at Mount Stromlo
|
It has been two decades since the 2003 Canberra bushfire that burned through 70 per cent of the Australian Capital Territory.
In one ruinous day, four people were killed, hundreds injured and 500 homes destroyed. The internationally-renowned Mount Stromlo Observatory was among the many government and commercial buildings wiped out.
At the time, Vice-Chancellor Professor Brian Schmidt was based at Mount Stromlo, pursuing the work that ultimately earned him the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics.
He spoke with ANU Reporter about his close encounter with the fire.

- Wattle, the ANU learning management system, was upgraded from Moodle 3.9 to version 4.0 on Monday 5 December 2022. Find out more about the upgrade and how you can take advantage of everything it has to offer.
- As the start of Semester 1 is approaching fast, it’s important to ensure that you, who will be teaching, know what support will be available and how to engage with these support initiatives prior to and during the start of Semester 1. Read more on our Learning Space Technology SharePoint Site.
- There is a new process for providing new staff with access to the University’s systems and services. Shared Services and PSP have launched the Staff Provisioning Request eForm to streamline access to University systems and services for new staff members and internal staff movements. The eForm will initially be used to provision new staff for all Service Divisions as well as new staff in CECC and CAP.
- Major changes are coming to AARNet provided CloudStor Services. AARNet are decommissioning CloudStor service in December 2023. AARNet will continue to offer the FileSender feature of CloudStor as a stand-alone service for transferring large files online. They will also continue to host legacy Zoom recordings that are stored on CloudStor. Please contact Helen Duke (helen.duke@anu.edu.au) if you have any questions.
