As soon as we noticed the error, we worked with ANZ to ensure staff were paid as soon as possible.  

The University sent an email to staff on Wednesday evening alerting them to the issue. Approximately 50 staff reached out and were offered assistance to pay for medical appointments, transport to critical appointments and food expenses.  

Thursday afternoon (30 March) our finance team confirmed the funds had been debited from the ANU bank account and staff started to receive payment to their nominated accounts.  

We understand this may have caused some stress and inconvenience to staff. If you experienced any hardship as a result of the pay issue, please email the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Corporate) coo@anu.edu.au with any relevant documentation and evidence and ANU will refund you.  

We are working to ensure this error will not happen again with additional checks and an audit of the current system. This matter was also raised at ANU Council on Friday 31 March.  

ANU is proud to announce the following staff and students as 2023 Westpac Scholars. 

Five ANU students and one staff member were awarded the prestigious scholarships under three categories – Westpac Research Fellowships, Future Leaders and Asian Exchange Scholarships. 

While each recipient plans to use their scholarship to explore different ventures, they’re all united by a shared desire to make valuable contributions to the lives of Australians by influencing positive change and creating a better future for our nation.

The ANU Chaplaincy is a multifaith and Muslim prayer room that provides a safe and inclusive space for students and staff of all faiths or no faith. With a diverse community of members from Catholic, Muslim, Humanist, Buddhist, Uniting Church, and Pentecostal traditions, the Chaplaincy offers pastoral care, spiritual guidance, and a range of activities relating to faith, religion, and spirituality.  
 
As April is a holy month for many, the ANU Chaplaincy is a vital resource to support students and staff during this time.  
 
We spoke to the Chaplaincy Team Leader, Robbie Tulip, about the role of the ANU Chaplaincy, its history, the services and support it provides, and what's on the horizon for the Chaplaincy in 2023.

Need to unwind? Join the ANU Counselling and Wellbeing for a weekly 20-minute mindfulness practice open to all staff and students. This weekly facilitated 20-minute mindfulness practice is open to all staff and students. The group runs on a drop-in basis & is open to all staff and students with an interest in mindfulness. The facilitator will be available after the practice if members of the group would like to ask questions or discuss aspects of mindfulness.

Tuesday 11 April, 2.30-4pm  

The ANU College of Law will be hosting a talk by Senator Hilda Heine, the first female president and head of state in any Micronesian country, will be speaking about women and leadership in the Pacific, as well as the connection between gender and climate justice. The event will be co-hosted by the Gender Institute and moderated by Emerita Professor Margaret Jolly, a renowned scholar of gender and Pacific studies, and followed by afternoon tea.

Human rights lawyer and author, Jennifer Robinson and Professor Kim Rubenstein will host an insightful conversation on the urgent and vital topic of gender-based violence and censorship, as explored in Jennifer's book, How Many More Women? Delving into the legal response to the MeToo movement in Australia and around the world, this event is a must-attend for those passionate about human rights and equality. The appointment of Professor in Indigenous Genomics, Alex Brown, a leading Indigenous doctor and scientist, to the board of the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) is an important moment for both CSIRO and ANU. As the first Indigenous member of the board, Professor Brown's appointment is a significant step forward for diversity and representation in the scientific community. His groundbreaking work in Indigenous genomics is helping to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and his leadership will undoubtedly strengthen the CSIRO's direction and performance.  

Career guidance through Mentor Walks

Mentor Walks are back for 2023 and open for all women at any stage of their careers. You’ll have the opportunity to seek great advice from female CEOs, directors, executives, entrepreneurs and leaders in their fields who want to help women succeed and get the career help they need. This is a safe space to discuss any career challenges you may be facing and enable growth and development in your current role.

ANYOU Staff Engagement Survey

Thank you to all the staff members who participated in the ANU Staff Engagement survey, with over 3,000 staff completing the survey and submitting over 11,000 comments. Congratulations to the ANU Advancement team for an exceptional 89% response rate. In the next three weeks, People and Culture will analyse the feedback, identify unique strengths, areas for improvement, and opportunities for making a difference. Staff will be informed and work with People and Culture through various channels, including regular updates, debriefs with leaders, an ANU Town Hall, and an email with the survey results summary. 

Consultations for next Vice-Chancellor

The People & Culture division is facilitating a University consultation process to gather feedback from the ANU community regarding the desired qualities, values, and attributes for the new Vice-Chancellor. You can participate in this process through various opportunities that will be announced in the coming weeks, and VCsearch@anu.edu.au has been set up to ensure all voices can be heard.
