Who do we remember when we come together on Anzac Day and who do we forget?  Anzac all too often is the story of soldiers, but women also suffered and also served. 

This Anzac Day, The Australian National University will tell the story of Narrelle Hobbes, reminding us of those who fall outside the official ambit of remembrance.

In a special Anzac Day Broadcast, three ANU historians will trace her remarkable journey across the globe. 

An International Relations expert and human rights advocate at the ANU Coral Bell School, Professor Bina D'Costa has been appointed as the United Nations Human Rights Council Special Procedures Mandate Holder in the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (WGEPAD).  

A devoted human rights advocate, Bina plans to use her position in the WGEPAD to work alongside people of African descent and help identify patterns of exclusion that function as barriers to their issues as well as contribute to the framing of human rights advocacy and aspirations at a global level. 

"I am committed to contribute to understandings of how to decolonise human rights and develop deeper knowledge of a whole range of concerns that impact people of African descent." 

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work on Friday 28 April aims to raise awareness of the prevention of occupational accidents and diseases globally, and the responsibility of governments, employers, and workers to ensure a safe and healthy working environment through laws, infrastructure, and participation in preventive measures. 

At ANU we prioritise and value the safety and wellbeing of our staff, with a focus on ensuring a healthy and inclusive work environment. Maintaining your health and wellness and supporting the health and wellness of those around you, is an important part of our daily life on campus.

To mark this day the Work Environment Group/Work Health and Safety Team (from within the People and Culture Division - formerly the Human Resources Division) compiled a checklist to ensure you and your team can work safely at ANU.

The Fighting Racism and Bigotry conversation series is back for 2023.  

The intersection of racism and barriers to mental health care creates a significant challenge for people of colour and minorities. The impact of racism on mental health is well-documented and significant, contributing to problems such as depression, anxiety, and trauma. 

This conversation panel will explore experiences of racism, related mental health concerns and current support structures on campus. It will also consider ways in which the University can improve its wellbeing and mental health services for the ANU community.

Tracey Spicer will be in conversation with Michelle Ryan on Tracey's new book Man-Made: How the bias of the past is being built into the future, in which the Walkley Award-winning journalist exposes the next frontier of feminism. Man-Made aims to open readers' eyes to a transformative technological shift in society and give them the tools to make positive change.

COVID-19: Your up-to-date information  

Now that the winter season is almost upon us, a few reminders: 

- If you test positive to COVID-19, you still need to register your positive result via the ANU form and inform your supervisor. 

- If you are feeling unwell, you should stay home.  

- If you must come to campus or travel in public for something unavoidable, wear a mask and keep your distance from others.   

- You can book telehealth appointments via the ANU Medical Centre for COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 related medical concerns. 

- Staff can access free flu vaccinations to maintain their health and wellbeing during the upcoming influenza season. Staff can receive the vaccination on campus at the ANU Medical Centre or Pharmacy, or off campus by accessing a voucher code (via HORUS) to be used at any Terry White Chemist.   

- ANU staff can also book an appointment to receive a free COVID-19 booster dose on campus at the University Pharmacy. For more info, visit the ATAGI’s vaccine booster advice.

Changes to staff log in from the Information Security Office

On Wednesday 26 April, the next phase of streamlining and improving ANU login security will commence by adding a secondary Authenticator prompt to Web Applications.

This will use the same authenticator app (i.e. MS Authenticator, Google Authenticator) staff already have set up on their devices, so there is nothing new required.

First Kambri Market happening this Friday

The Joplin Lane Markets will provide a great opportunity for staff and students to sell their items in a sustainable way. It’s free to have a stall, we just ask that you don’t sell food or drink. To book a stall space, contact Geraldine or Dharmesh via Kambri.venues@anu.edu.au. 

If you don't have anything to sell, come and enjoy the Joplin Lane Friday music sessions while indulging in some lunch at the Kambri tenancies and grooving to some awesome tunes, all while supporting a sustainable event initiative. 

 

Vice-Chancellor's Award for Reconciliation – call for nominations  

A reminder that nominations for the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Reconciliation are open and will close next week on Tuesday 2 May. 

From 2023, the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Reconciliation will be awarded to align with National Reconciliation week, in May-June each year. 

This award aims to encourage and recognise ANU staff members for initiatives and activities that support the pursuit of reconciliation, within the University or beyond.
