Penny has been an academic developer since 2010, working with academics to design and develop curriculum and policy, supporting staff who are new to teaching in higher education and those seeking recognition for teaching innovation, and teaching accredited programs in higher education that focus on learning design and technology for teaching.

Previous roles have included first year course coordinator and tutor, elearning advisor, instructional developer, website and publications editor, and education officer and curator.

Penny has a Masters of Research in Linguistics from Macquarie and a Masters in eLearning from UTS. She is part of a group of linguistics researching the linguistics of peace, compassion and empathy and is a convenor of the TELedvisors network, which is the ASCILITE special interest group for academics and professional staff working with educational technology in Australasian universities.

She values the edtech community in Canberra and has helped organise events such as Moodleposium / Edtechposium, bringing together staff from different universities and others beyond the sector for professional development. In recent research she has enjoyed working with people from a number of universities to consider the social impacts of emerging technologies and whether artificial intelligence applications can support creative teaching practice.
