Council met in person for the fifth meeting of 2022.

Council Membership
Council welcomed the following recently elected academic staff members whose two-year terms commenced on 30 September 2022: Professor Craig Moritz, Professor Lyndall Strazdins and Dr Liz Allen.

Council also welcomed recently elected postgraduate student representative, Mr William Moisis, whose 12-month term began on 30 September 2022.

Council thanked Christian Flynn ahead of his term ending on 30 November 2022 and also acknowledged the election of Ben Yates as Christian's successor as the undergraduate student representative.

New Student Safety and Wellbeing Committee of Council
An Interim Chair, Council members and ANU student representatives have now been appointed to the Committee.  The Committee will now meet and formally begin its work.  

Passing of Former Chancellor 
Council expressed its deepest condolences on the passing of former ANU Chancellor, Dr Allan Hawke AC, on 31 August 2022.  Dr Hawke served in the role from 2006 to 2008.  The ANU tribute was published on 1 September 2022.

Vice-Chancellor's Report
Council considered the Vice-Chancellor's report, including updates about senior leadership positions, government engagement and well-being on campus.    

International Strategy
Council considered the evolution of the International Strategy in light of significant changes to the international student market.

Other Matters
Council considered several other significant issues concerning financial planning, student enrolments, risk management, implementing the Strategic Plan, the Digital Master Plan, and reports from Council Committees and the Academic Board.

Council is also preparing for its retreat in February 2023, where it will explore strategic matters such as University Rankings and the evolution of the First Nations portfolio at the ANU.
