Asian Art In-Country / Exploring Art in Asia intensive course

The Asian Art In-Country / Exploring Art in Asia course is run as an in-country intensive. Students will spend time in an Asian country studying art and culture first hand, visiting historical sites and museums (next scheduled for Spring session 2019 approx dates 1-14 September)

In 2019 the course includes approximately 12 days in Myanmar, starting in Yangon and visiting key historic sites such as the Shwedagon Pagoda. We will travel to Sri Ksetra, the first millennium Pyu city (Burma's first UNESCO heritage listed site) then to the ancient capital of Bagan, where over 3,000 temples - most dating from the 11th-13th centuries - are scattered over a vast plain. From Bagan the course will take students to Mandalay to visit some of the last temples and monasteries built under royal patronage, and see the many workshops in the city to watch artisans create marble Buddha images, cast statues in metal, weave and wood carve. On return to Yangon students will look at the colonial architecture of the city and visit contemporary art galleries. By the end of the study tour, students will have a strong appreciation of Burmese history, heritage and visual culture. Please note, the itinerary is subject to change.
