Adjustment to graduation schedule

From 2025, all ANU graduation ceremonies will be streamlined to a single week per year. This change will enhance the student graduation experience and address previous scheduling challenges. The 2025 graduation ceremonies will take place from Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 2025.

The July 2024 graduation ceremony will proceed as usual and this will be the final graduation ceremony held in 2024.

Students who complete their program at the end of Semester 2, 2024 will be eligible to attend graduation ceremonies during the week of Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 2025

When will the new graduation schedule begin? 

The new schedule will commence in 2025. Following Open Day on Saturday March 29, graduation ceremonies will be held from Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 2025.

Beyond 2025, graduation ceremonies will be held annually in March/April.

I completed my certificate/diploma/degree in Semester 1, 2024. Will the July 2024 graduations proceed as planned?

Yes, the July 2024 graduations will continue as scheduled and students who complete their certificate/diploma/degree in Semester 1, 2024 will graduate in the July 2024 graduation ceremony. 

I will complete my program in Semester 2, 2024, how will this change affect me?

Students who finish their studies from Semester 2, 2024 onwards will now attend the annual graduation ceremonies held in late March to early April.  Students will have their award conferred within the month following the publication of semester results, ensuring timely access to qualifications via My eQuals.

How will this change impact international students on a visa?

International students may need to apply for a new visa if the graduation ceremony date falls outside their current visa expiration. Detailed information about visa requirements and extensions can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website.

Can I receive hard copies of my academic transcript and AHEGS? 

Students may purchase hard copies of academic transcripts and Academic transcripts and Australian Higher Education Graduations Statements (AHEGS) via ISIS. Please note, that students are only issued one testamur; either by mail if you are graduating in-absentia, or on-stage if you are attending a graduation ceremony.

How will this change affect my ability to enter the job market?

The new schedule ensures that diplomas/certificates/degrees are conferred in the month following the notification of semester results, ensuring those completing can enter the job market or apply for further study in a timely manner. Digital access to testamurs, transcripts and Australian Higher Education Graduations Statements (AHEGS) will be available via My eQuals
 

What if I need to prove I’ve graduated before the ceremony?

If you need to prove you’ve graduated before the ceremony, diploma/certificates/degrees are conferred in the month following the notification of semester results. You will have digital access to your testamur, academic transcript, and the Australian Higher Education Graduation Statement (AHEGS) via My eQuals, which you can use for employment or further study applications.

I won’t be able to come back for the ceremony in March/April the next year. Will I still be able to graduate?

Yes, you will still be able to graduate even if you cannot attend the ceremony in March/April. You may graduate in absentia; your diploma/certificate/degree will be conferred, and your testamur will be mailed to your nominated address. You will also receive your testamur and other graduation documents digitally. 

How will this affect students who finish their studies from July 2024 onwards?

Students who finish their studies from July 2024 onwards will be invited to graduate in the annual ceremony held in late March to early April 2025. Their diplomas/certificates/degrees will be conferred in the month following the notification of semester results, ensuring timely access to qualifications.

What happens if I have interim results or pending assessment appeals? 

The new schedule provides additional time to resolve deferred and supplementary assessments, allowing more students to attend a graduation ceremony with their cohort.

Can I attend a future graduation ceremony if I graduate out-of-session? 

Yes, ANU graduates who confer their award outside of our main end of semester periods are welcome to return to attend a graduation ceremony. 

How will the new schedule affect assessment? 

Decoupling graduations from the end-of-semester examination periods will allow greater opportunity for innovative assessment methods and promote greater assessment rigor.

When will the new annual graduation ceremony be held? 

The new annual graduation ceremony will be held in late March to early April. The first consolidated graduation week will be from Monday, 31 March to Friday, 4 April 2025, aligning with Open Day on Saturday, 29 March 2025.

How many ceremonies will there be?

We expect there will be 10-15 distinct College-based ceremonies per annum.

How can I apply to attend the 2025 graduation?

The new schedule will commence in 2025. Following Open Day on Saturday March 29, graduation ceremonies will be held from Monday 31 March to Friday 4 April 2025.

Beyond 2025, graduation ceremonies will be held annually in March/April.

When will the new graduation schedule begin? 

Most students do not need to apply to graduate. Generally, students will be automatically identified and assessed by the academic area responsible for their program. Please refer to the Applying to Graduate guide for details.

Will the process to apply to graduate change with the new graduation ceremony?

The application process for graduation will remain unchanged. Please refer to the preparing to graduate guide for details.

Where can I find the Graduation Timetable?

The graduation timetable will be published shortly. Students are encouraged to check the graduation webpage for the complete timetable after invitations have been sent.

Will I still be able to invite my family or friends?

Yes, you will still be able to invite your family and friends to your graduation ceremony.  Students are guaranteed two guest tickets, however, the University will strive to accommodate as many guests as possible within the capacity limits of the venue. Graduands will know how many tickets they have secured well in advance of the ceremony, assisting with family and guest planning.

Will there be any changes to the format or duration of the graduation ceremony?

The format and duration of your graduation ceremony will be designed to provide a memorable, high-quality experience.  ANU will ensure that the ceremony remains a memorable celebration for all graduates and their guests.

Will there be any impact on the number of guest tickets I can receive?

Decisions regarding additional guest tickets, beyond the two guest ticket guarantee, will be confirmed well in advance of ceremonies allowing families and guests more time to plan.

Will I still graduate with my classmates? 

Yes, the new graduation schedule is designed to allow more students to graduate with their peers. By allowing additional time to resolve deferred and supplementary assessments, the University can help more students graduate with their cohort.

Will the new schedule increase wait times for graduation ceremonies? 

Yes, there will be an increased wait time for students to attend a ceremony, however, diplomas/certificates/degrees will still be conferred promptly, allowing the qualification to be used in the job market or to be used to apply for your next academic program.

Will there be any support for students who are impacted by this change?

Yes, ANU will provide support for students who are impacted by this change. Students are encouraged to contact the Graduations Office with their enquires.

Why is ANU changing the graduation schedule? 

The change will enhance the student and staff experience, bringing the full graduating year together to celebrate in unison. Graduations will also be aligned with other University-wide events, such as Open Day, creating an enlivened campus atmosphere.
