Independent Learning Abroad
Independent Learning Abroad programs (also called Study Abroad) undertaken during the semester period are self-sourced and managed, with students responsible for all costs incurred and will pay fees directly to the host university or provider. Students are entirely responsible for the learning abroad opportunity and all necessary arrangements to enable participation.
Most universities around the world will have information on their websites about study abroad program eligibility and how students can apply.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
Students are required to make all of their own arrangements, including the provision of appropriate insurance coverage. ANU Global Programs can provide general advice on whether independent learning abroad might be appropriate, however students will not receive any program-specific assistance. It is up to each student to explore what is possible and to apply to the specific university directly.
To receive academic credit for an independent learning abroad program, course selections must be approved by a student's academic College. Students should meet with an academic advisor from their college before applying to an independent learning abroad program. Students will need to supply their college with a list of course outlines and classes they plan to take while overseas, which will be assessed to determine if those courses can be credited towards the students ANU degree.
Where can I go?
Independent learning abroad is available worldwide but consideration should be given to destination safety and any ongoing or potential COVID impacts and restrictions. Students should also consider the relevant immigration and travel requirements of their proposed destination.
The host university is not required to have an existing agreement with ANU, however it should be a reputable university that aligns academically with the student's ANU studies. Students are required to meet the host university's entry requirements.
How much will it cost?
Cost varies depending on the host university. Students will need to pay tuition fees directly and any other fees (if applicable) to the host university. Students will also be responsible for all other costs incurred relating to the independent learning abroad program, including sourcing appropriate insurance coverage.
Eligibility
Eligibility requirements for independent learning abroad programs are decided by the host university. Before starting an application, students should check the host university's entry requirements relating to GPA, level of study, languages, citizenship and available faculties. The host university may have other requirements that students must research and adhere to.
Can I receive academic credit?
Students may be eligible for academic credit. Global Programs recommend students apply for pre-approval for academic credit. Each college has a college specific process for applying for credit for an independent learning abroad. Global Programs suggests you contact your college directly for support on the appropriate process to apply for academic credit.
