Remote delivery

During the COVID-19 restrictions, a number of your classes will be delivered remotely. This will present some challenges for class participation. Here are some handy tips for getting the most out of your Zoom sessions.

Lots of information and downloads can be found on the ANU Zoom site: https://services.anu.edu.au/information-technology/software-systems/anu-zoom-client.

Top tips

  • Download the Zoom app onto your device. Even though you can access Zoom via your browser, it works more smoothly if you download the desktop application.
  • Think about your background. If other people will be seeing you, you want to make sure that your background in private and/or presentatble. If you can't move to a neutral area, and if you're uncomfortable with sharing your background, make use of the Zoom virtual backgrounds. Background noise might also be an issue. If you can't find a quiet spot, mute your microphone until you need to speak.
  • If you're able to, turn your video on unless you've been asked not to. Sometimes to preserve bandwidth in large meetings you might be asked to turn off your video. It is always nice for meeting participants to see each other - even if only for a short period of time at the start of the meeting. If you need to turn off your video, it's useful to have a profile picture loaded up so other participants don't just see a wall of black rectangles.
  • Interact and participate. You may still be assessed on your participation in Zoom workshops/tutorials. You should prepare for them in the same way that you would an in-person class by completing any pre-reading or activities. You may be asked to participate in break-out rooms - these enable the tutor to assign class members to small groups for discussion. As a participant there are a number of non-verbal ways that you can communicate with the host or the other participants. If you click on the Participants button, a number of icons will appear that you can use to communicate with the host and other participants. You message will appear next to your name in the list. You can also use the Chat room to send messages.
